  Your Top Ten Books

  i love the book lists on amazon; i get lost in them for hours.

  recently someone asked me for book recommendations, and i thought it would be fun if we shared our lists of top ten books that helped us think our way out of the jw dogma.

  im putting aside the obvious ones, like crisis of conscience and apocalypse delayed.. heres my list, in the order i discovered them as best i can recall.. ginny.

  Boy to narrow my favourite books down to 10 is hard...

  1) American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis (all his books actually)
  2) Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
  3) The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta
  4) The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
  5) Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger
  6) Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
  7) ALL of Jack Kerouac"s
  8) Junky by William Burroughs
  9) Malcolm X by Malcolm and Alex Haley
  10) of course anything by Dr. Seuss !!!!

  I'd had enough of religious books just went out to find another focus...

  Getting married....any advise?

  i'm getting married in a few weeks to the man that was disfellowshipped with me for 'committing adultery in our hearts".

  we have been together for 5 years and have a wonderful and warm relationship, no fear or guilt.

  the only blimp on the horizon is his family, some of whom are maniacs when it comes to the letter of the law.

  You are right of course as long as we are happy and my children love us that's the important thing

  We have been together for 5 years and have a wonderful and warm relationship, no fear or guilt. The only blimp on the horizon is his family, some of whom are maniacs when it comes to the letter of the law. They have tried to play mind games with us and keep us apart. When we told them of our impending marriage they went mental and put us under terrible strain, we have weathered it and dealt with the police, which they sent round to us accusing us of 'dirty phone calls' of course it wasn't true but it was an attempt to upset us. They said they were coming to the wedding but then said to my boyfriend that they weren't because unless he came back then he was as good as dead and as he would die at Armageddon what was the point of attaching themselves to a dead person ??
  My question is this...in the face of such emotional cruelty how do we rise above it ?? How do we constantly maintain our dignity ? I feel that such an injustice is being carried out and constant aspertion are being cast on our character within our local community. I'm beginning to dread my wedding day as only one member of his family are coming...my heart hurts for my partner.

  i am a new face to this website, although i have poked around in it for some time.

  i was born and raised as a witness starting in brooklyn, new york in 1973. i was disfellowshipped on my 26th birthday, november 20th, 1999. i am not one of those that feels bitter about it.

  i know full well that the jw's have a code of morals and behavior that quite honestsly, i did not live up to.

  I read your comments with interest, I am like you in that I am not angry about being disfellowshipped, although I didn't do anything technically wrong...I just see it as a great relief to be out and living. Its good to have you around
  To pabrooks: it is often easier once you step back and re-examine the org that you understand more fully what is was that was nagging at the back of your mind for all those years. I now understand from reading sociologist, psychologist and philosophers (basically all things placed on the banned list) that the WTBTS use very good at using typical methods of control and I'm just relieved to be out. The cycle of guilt and fear is exhausting

  We can't all help what our parents do to us but we can stop it effecting all our life...Glad to see that you've got up and started fighting for your own.

  Education =Looser Ignorance=Winner

  i attended college during late 80's and early 90's when university was a taboo, bad karma, unchristian, bad example...how could you do that.

  i endured myriads of encouragements to lure me away from materialism.

  when i moved to another congregation, i learned to downplay my full fledged student status and in silence i finished my school.. how many of you went to universities when you were an active jw?

  I am a university student hence the name 'uni girl' but I didn't go whilst a witness cos no one would support me, not even for night classes.
  Once I got out of 'jail' I run to university and took sociology and philosophy and now know why the org don't want us to go..they don't want anyone to think alternatively or experiencing different ideas.
  I've got my degree now and have gone on to study a masters...

  good luck in your studying, without knowledge there is no life

  Im from the UK (yes we are better than the Yanks ha ha)
  I became a witness in 1985 and was disfellowshipped in 1996.
  Regular Pioneered for 10 years and was married at 18 to a ministerial servant. Had 3 kids, was abused and left. Was disfellowshipped for talking to 'friendly' with another brother who was disfellowshipped at the same time. The ground were 'committing adultery in the heart' Aas we hadn't even thought of sex never mind doing it.....Amazing to be out can finally breathe...as the circumstances forced us together and we had no friends we stayed together...getting married in 5 WEEKS !!!

  Eminem and censorship

  when my son came home from the meeting, he told me that they were told not to listen to eminem because (in his words) he's bad.. i can not stomach the kind of censorship that is put upon people...aren't these things a personal choice or at least a parents choice.

  by censoring everything they make a child go behind their parents back and close the line of communcation which could result in some real harm.

  i listened to eminem with my son and whilst some of the things are very offensive it was quite clear to me that although he was talking in the first person, he was actually expressing what he thought societal problems were,(no one think bob marley actually son the sheriff do they??).

  You know I love Bob Dylan and he spoke of societies ills and in a quite forthright manner. He accessed the audience by speaking their language. Eminem is the same. Do you think Dylan did it as a volunteer or is he living comfortably?? the track 'Kids' enables a good debate on drugs with my kids.
  Eminem makes quite a point when he says
  ' they blame it on Marilyn..but where were the parents at??'
  Perhaps America is not ready for rap music, perhaps they are still uncomfortable about the rage against injustice. They hunted NWA down, Hounded Tupac and they have now set there sights on Eminem and Marilyn Mansun. If parents bring there kids up to respect people and allow their children to have a voice, they will discern right and wrong. What causes problems is when you shut the lines of communication...music with a difficult message allows discussion as it has done with me and my son. Eminem is no different to all the ones that have gone before him, those who have been radical.
  If Eminem is homophobic then why did Elton John show support for him,,,why did Madonna??

  I see that I have provoked a lively debate...brilliant!!

  The thing that I agree with is what wendy says...he is funny and extremely entertaining.

  I do not for one minute think that he is single handedly responsible for the problems within the youth culture at all. As I said in my original post, although he talks in the first person it does not neccessarily mean that its his opinion...it works better in the first person. I actually think Eminem is a good thing for USA because he is bringing to the fore the breakdown of the American dream and I think that everyone who is getting their knickers in a twist , is falling foul to propaganda and believing what the media feed them. It does the governments of the world good to discredit him because hes saying what is really true, just like NWA or Tupac. If a smoke screen goes around him then people concentrate more on the supposed offensive lyrics and do not get a sense of the true message. It also works on another level because it stirs up the homosexual community and then they further antagonise the situation so for the powers that be, its a double whammy they alienate not only eminem but also the homosexual community

  I think its stupid to believe that everyone is at the same stage of developing as a human...Eminem was simply verbalising the mumblings of society as a whole and maybe through debating his lyrics some good will come...censorship is never the answer I want freedom to decide what I want to read/listen to, I do not ever want to be told had enough of that when I was a JW
